EVOCAT - The Evolution of Morphosyntactic Categorization: Formal Typology, Diachrony, and Comparative Reconstruction of the Mental Lexicon
Welcome to the website of the EVOCAT project!
EVOCAT investigates how categorizers - “stem-forming morphemes” - arise and change over time and what role they play in speakers' mental grammars. Our goal is to develop a typology of categorizer change based on large data sets from ancient and modern languages (primarily Indo-European ones) and to integrate the generalizations that follow from this typology into the reconstruction of language interrelationships within the Indo-European language family and beyond.
